“There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2)
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)
The other day I was frantically rushing to work to get to an important meeting. Unfortunately, I was running behind schedule and beginning to get very anxious about the appointment I needed to prepare for. When I got down the subway steps, I immediately started sprinting full speed towards the train platform. Right, as I got to the door I was disappointed to see the subway cars were jammed packed with angry people. There was no room for me or anyone else to squeeze in. Attempting would have been suicidal during this type of morning commute. I put my head down in total discouragement as I tried to think of what I would do next. I wanted to scream and cry all at the same time. Getting a cab during rush hour would have been pointless, and I was beginning to accept defeat. Just as I was about to turn around and walk in the other direction, two guys inside the subway car yell out, “come on brother, we got room for one more”…. Like a small chubby boy seeing a candy store for the first time my head lifted in total amazement. These guys called me into the crowd of people and squeezed enough room for me to get safely inside. I was shocked that these strangers would sacrifice their personal space just moments before the doors closed to make room for me! Their simple act of sacrifice and generosity made it possible for me to get to work on time and changed the course of my day for the better.
I love how Jesus promises that in his Father’s house there are many rooms. Just like the guys in my subway car Jesus is also preparing a place for us in Heaven. Luckily Heaven is not a packed subway car, a trendy nightclub or an exclusive country club with select groups of members. The invitation Jesus is offering is open to everyone who is willing to listen, accept and believe in the ultimate sacrifice he made for all of us on the cross.
The Bible teaches that the greatest love we can ever give or experience is to lay down our lives for a friend. So who are you laying your life down for? Are you making room for others, or have you become so busy and preoccupied with yourself that you forgot about other people?
It doesn’t have to be a life sacrifice that leads to death. However the daily sacrifices of our time, resources and friendship can make the world of difference in someone’s life. Many people in our society are hurting and longing for a sign from Heaven that someone up in the sky cares about them. As believers, we need to step up and accept the fact that we are the hands and feet of Jesus. Be aware of what the Holy Spirit is showing you today. Listen for his voice, and ask him to lead you to the right people. Your generosity may change the course of someone’s journey, and lead them to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Let’s continue to invite more people in, because there is always room for one more…
